]]>We enjoy getting outside and exploring, and with so much to do and see, we wanted to highlight a few of our favorite spots to enjoy mother nature here in Algonquin. The Fox River is only 10 minutes from Algonquin Square, and there are multiple forest preserves with features like lakes, streams, walking trails, grasslands, and ponds all within a few miles of our apartment complexes.
Here is a list of some of the best nature and hiking trails in and around Algonquin.
Right next to each other on the Fox River, these two forest preserves offer over 5 miles of trails along a 3.5 mile stretch of the river. There is a picnic shelter, restrooms, water pump, information kiosks, and more highlighting wetlands, prairie lands, across 723 acres. When combined with the other surrounding forest preserves, there are over 1,000 acres to explore. Bird watching is also wonderful at this preserve. You can bike, run, or walk along the Fox River here.
This beautiful little natural area offers horseback riding, fishing, and even a model aircraft field. While somewhat smaller, it has some of the most picturesque, unique landscapes in Kane County and offers visitors the chance to see a fragile and versatile ecosystem right here in Algonquin, just 10 minutes southwest of Algonquin Square. It provides a valuable window to the past with a panoramic view of multiple habitats from the vast to the niche. Take a nice run, walk, or have a picnic in this unique landscape.
With over 9 miles of hiking trails, this preserve is worth the trip a little further south. There are gorgeous vistas and rolling terrain, being one of the largest preserves in our district. Various plant and soil communities reside here and offer visitors a look into the natural landscapes that came before civilization. Woodlands, marsh, and prairie all exist in this little natural wonderland, so be sure to make a day trip out of it!
The largest of our 4 spots mentioned in this list, Spring Lake is a fantastic place to take long, winding trails over hills and valleys. Over 45 miles of trails across 4,000 acres make this trip out east one that feels both vast and secretive, with ponds, woodlands, grasslands, and more. Take your time with this one or make multiple trips, as it’s sure to become one of your favorite spots.
With fall coming fast, it’s going to be a great time to get out and experience the changing seasons and colors. What are some of your favorite local trails?

]]>Yoga is a great workout and a fantastic way to find some peace of mind and slow down in today’s busy world. Yoga in the park is one of our favorite events because it gets people outside, brings the community together for an uplifting event, and is a free outdoor yoga event.
Saturday mornings are a perfect time for this, ending the week and starting a new one, beginning the weekend with something healthy and uplifting. The summer event goes through August at two different locations within 10-15 minutes of Algonquin Square Apartments here in Algonquin.

There will be several types of yoga. Yoga mats are not provided, so please bring your own yoga mat, towel, and water bottle. We recommend not eating within one hour of the class. The event is open to anyone 12 and over and is completely free!
Be sure to check out the Randall Oaks Zoo as well, just north of where the yoga will be held.
Location Two – Sleepy Hollow Pool Side Yard
Where: Sleepy Hollow Pool, Side Yard – 875 Winmoor Dr., Sleepy Hollow, IL 60118

This location is great because there is also the Jelke Creek Bird Sanctuary and Nature Preserve is just down the road, with miles of nature trails, bird watching, biking trails, and more. The 244 acres contain trees and ponds specifically designed to house different types of birds. These ponds were also part of the water quality improvement grant and allow water to be cleaned as it percolates through gravel beds and native plants into the ground.
Be sure to check out both spots this month and feel free to drop us a comment with any questions!
